Claude Prompt: System Prompt Pitfalls and Version-Control Guidance for Law Firms
A meta-guide on the four most common Claude system prompt pitfalls for law firms — bloat, contradictions, over-constraining, ignoring model updates — plus versioning advice.
The Prompt
bloat: Do not keep adding instructions without removing outdated ones. A 2,000-word system prompt is not necessarily better than a focused 500-word one. Claude has a context window limit; every token used by the system prompt is a token unavailable for the conversation.
Contradictory instructions: “Be concise” and “provide comprehensive analysis” in the same prompt create an impossible mandate. Be specific about when each behavior applies.
Over-constraining: If the prompt is so restrictive that the AI cannot handle reasonable variations of common tasks, you have over-engineered it. Leave room for the model to apply judgment.
Ignoring model updates: When Anthropic releases new Claude versions, re-test your prompts. Model behavior can change, and a prompt optimized for Claude 3.5 may need adjustment for Claude 4.
Version control your system prompts the same way you version control code. Date them, note what changed, and keep previous versions so you can roll back if a revision underperforms. At The Legal Prompts, we maintain a library of tested, versioned system prompts that are continuously updated—saving our users from having to do this maintenance themselves.Expected Output
A reference checklist law firms can use to audit existing Claude system prompts: detect bloat, resolve contradictions, avoid over-constraining, and plan for model updates with proper version control.
Usage Notes
This is a meta/reference resource rather than an executable system prompt. Use it as a checklist when building or auditing your firm's Claude Project library — pair it with the four full system prompts in this set.
